When your little girl is growing up, buying footwear can prove to be quite difficult. Measuring for footwear can be an arduous task and choosing the right shoe with the correct fit can seem like a mine field.

There are quite a few factors to consider when shopping for girls shoes. As well as style, it's important to make sure any footwear worn has the comfort, support and space for feet to develop properly.

We can't always rely on our little ones to let us know when something isn't right and continued wear of unsuitable shoes can cause ongoing problems. The best footwear for both boys and girls are all about fit, form and function, not fashion. What Size Do Girls Shoes Come In?

Shoe sizes for kids are more complicated than adult sizing, some may be sized according to measurements and others may be age related. Some are also measured in European or US sizes, so it's always good to know how they translate so you can be sure of the accuracy.

Like boys shoes, girls shoe sizes can start at size zero in the UK (16EU), which would be an appropriate size for a new born baby, these will continue through to a child's size 13UK (32EU) and then onwards between a size 1UK (33EU) to a size 6 (39.5EU). Both boys shoes and girls shoes are sized in the same way, however boys shoes tend to be a little wider as standard.

Though these sizes are a good representation based on the age of your child, obviously, all children are unique and grow at different rates, particularly as a baby through to infant age. The most important thing is to buy the footwear that fits. Don't be tempted to size up just to avoid having to buy new as they grow. This is especially important when they are smaller, where shoes that are too large can become a trip hazard or leave them struggling to walk.

When measuring your little lady's feet, it's best to note the width too. Like in adults, not everyone has slim feet and trying to squeeze into shoes that are the wrong width can leave your feet feeling painful and sore. In the UK, children's shoes have a system of width fittings from C to I, these take into consideration how shallow or deep the arch of the foot is as well as how wide or narrow ensuring maximum support. Another thing to consider when buying girls shoes is heel height. Your girl may like the idea of wearing mummy's fancy party shoes with the huge stiletto heel, but these are far from ideal for growing feet. How to Measure Girl's Shoes

Measuring the size of children's feet is an essential part of shoe shopping. It's not only important to know the correct size of your tot's feet so you can buy accordingly, but also to keep track of their growth. Between the ages of 0 and 4, children's feet grow on average by 2 sizes per year. It's recommended that a toddler's feet are measured every 6 to 8 weeks with shoes replaced every 3 months. As children get older, their feet should be measured at least every 6 months, going up 1 size each year on average. These are however just guidelines and shoes should be replaced as and when needed.

Using just a ruler or tape measure, a pen, sticky tape and a piece of paper, follow these three easy steps on how to measure your little one's feet:

Simply tape the piece of paper to the floor and let your child stand on it. If they're unable to stand, place their foot and press down gently to ensure the foot is flat and their toes aren't curled.

Using the pen, draw a mark on the paper behind their heel, then draw another line in front of their longest toe.

Using the ruler or tape measure, note the distance in centimetres between the two lines.

The measurement taken can then be used in the shoe conversion chart to gauge what size is needed.

TOP TIP: If the shoes/boots are going to be worn with socks, measure the feet whilst wearing them to make sure there's enough wiggle room.

With endless styles available, it's tempting to buy your princess whatever shoes she wants, but always remember that sizing correctly from a young age will serve her well in the long term.
